NEWS FROM YOUR PARISH COUNCIL

If you missed our Annual Parish Meeting last month then make a note to attend next year's – it was a great opportunity for villagers and councillors to get together to hear about what is going on in the village and to air views about village matters. Special thanks go to Sandra and Kiernan Darnell who made us very welcome at the Northwick Arms and provided delicious refreshments. Our 2 speakers were Her Majesty's Lord Lieutenant of Rutland, Laurence Howard, who spoke of his humble background and how he worked his way up to his present position, and Jenny Harris, Conservation Officer with Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust with special responsibility for Ketton Old Quarry who kept us enthralled with amazing photos of the unique wildlife in the Old Quarry, including adders, lizards, butterflies, moths, orchids and parasitic plants. Jenny has agreed to lead 2 guided Old Quarry walks for villagers sometime between mid June and mid July. Each walk will be limited to 15 participants and it will be necessary to sign up in advance with Sarah our Parish Clerk.
2 concerns that were aired at the meeting were inconsiderate parking, and speeding. Parking across drives and on pavements, even for a short time, can be very frustrating for other residents and pedestrians. Speedchecks have been carried out since 2009. In 2016 the checkers recorded 400 incidents of vehicles travelling over 37mph through the village. More volunteers are needed to carry out checks - if you are able to help please contact the Parish Office. If you think that speeding in the village is an issue do contact Rutland County Councilwith your concerns - the more individual comments the more likely it is that Rutland County Council will act – please copy in Ketton Parish Council, and our county councillors – Gary Conde garyconde@hotmail.com and/or Diana MacDuff dmacduff@rutland.gov.uk .
Rutland County Council has a new website (same address www.rutland.gov.uk ), with an improved layout and structure, and designed to work better on smartphones and tablets. Some new functions are 'find my nearest' online map to locate services and report problems, 'my bills and benefits' to view Council Tax or Business rates bills and instalments, 'adult and social care self-assessment' for information and advice on choosing the best care and support. If you are struggling with your smartphone, tablet, or laptop then why not sign up with Sarah at the Parish Office for free one-to-one IT training sessions on a Monday between 1.30pm and 4,30pm ? Since the scheme started in late January almost 20 villagers have had at least one session with Berni, our very patient and dedicated volunteer trainer.
